How it started

I was tasked with writing and illustrating a graphic novel within 3 months. For this assignment, I split the time in three (1 month of planning, 1 month of writing, and 1 month of illustrating).

The process began with brainstorming ideas. Once I landed on the idea, I started writing the outline, script, and shaping the illustration style.

Brainstorming to Outline

Starting with the main points of the story, I piece them together and fill in missing parts. I highlight character goals, missions, motivations, environments, etc, and how it affects behaviors and decisions.

Things to consider:

Concept

Why is this story being made? What are the themes to convey?

Character

How can I show the concept and theme through their actions?

Outline to Script

This is when the story is established and the details are refined. Character dialogue and sounds are highlighted, allowing for a smooth transition into page organization and thumbnailing.

Amari

Amari is the protagonist. Her character is represented with green, as a stoic character who prioritizes logic and strategy to achieve her goals.

She is closed off and untrusting. Throughout the story, her helmet acts as a mask, hiding her inner thinking.

Despite her closed off nature, her expressions still break through in the shape of her helmet and it's highlights. The shape of the glass and her suit collar mimics eyebrow/eyelid movements while the highlights mimic pupils.

For example:

Left image is default expression.

Right image is a shocked expression.

Alya

Ayla is the deuteragonist and temporary antagonist. Her character is represented by yellow and pink.

She starts as a character of caution with her presence being overwhelming and unknown. Throughout the story, she changes to pink. She's now trusted by Amari but ultimately, still the opposite to her.

Passion Project

This story is still in development as a passion project in my freetime. Below are the redesigns of my main characters. Once these characters and the world building are developed further, the story will be rewritten and redrawn to better represent the story I want to tell.
